See, this woman is staying late, unchaperoned, at a dude’s house. “Hey what’s in this drink” was a stock joke at the time, and the punchline was invariably that there’s actually pretty much nothing in the drink, not even a significant amount of alcohol. Given a cursory glance and applying today’s worldview to the song, yes, you’re right, it absolutely sounds like a rape anthem. He insists it is about the obsession with a lost lover, and the jealousy and surveillance that follow. Sting later said he was disconcerted by how many people think the song is more positive than it is. I think I was thinking of Big Brother, surveillance and control. I didn't realise at the time how sinister it is. The tune itself is generic, an aggregate of hundreds of others, but the words are interesting.
Sting recalled: I woke up in the middle of the night with that line in my head, sat down at the piano and had written it in half an hour. The lyrics are the words of a possessive lover who is watching "every breath you take every move you make". I suppose everything is open to interpretation, but yeah, this song is pretty dark. It's literally about an obsessive man who is stalking his lover. Sting has stated on record that the song is very literal and he has no idea why it's become such an iconic wedding song. >!insert spoiler here!< Other subreddits you might like: some
